In skincare, there are a couple of brands that have become iconic in the luxury market. La Prairie is one of these brands that consistently brings out high quality, unique, luxury skincare. One of their most popular products from the range is their Caviar Luxe Cream. This luxurious moisturizing cream was created to nourish and rejuvenate, and has now been on the market for 30 years. But is this cult favorite product worth the price tag? Today we’re diving into the formula to find out! So without further adieu, let’s get started!
Who is the Caviar Luxe Cream For?
The La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream is best suited for those with dry or mature skin types. This cream is designed to be extremely rich, so if you have oily, sensitive or clogged prone skin, this may not be the best option for you.
The Cream
The La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream was designed to effectively nourish, hydrate and moisturize the skin. This cream was the first product in the Caviar Collection, which today, offers a well-developed range of creams, serums and even makeup products. The Original flanker however, is still the bestseller and the most recognizable product from the range.
While the original formula was released nearly 30 years ago, the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream was recently reformulated to be even more potent and effective. The team behind the Caviar Luxe Cream spent years collecting extensive research in order to make an already iconic cream even better.
The main active ingredient in this product is their Caviar. Over the years, La Prairie has created and developed several methods of using this ingredient deliver the most visible lifting and firming results. Today, the La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream features four different types of caviar-based ingredients, including caviar extract, caviar water, caviar absolute, and their most recent addition, caviar premier. All of the products in the Skin Caviar line feature these four ingredients, which build on each other to help reveal younger looking skin.
In addition to the advancements in caviar science, the Skin Caviar Luxe Cream also features the Exclusive Cellular Complex, which is unique to the brand. This blend utilizes biotechnological research to work with the other key ingredients to amplify their healing, nourishing and lifting powers.
Formula Focus
The La Prairie Skin Caviar Luxe Cream features a surprisingly extensive ingredients list with well over 70 ingredients. Some of these ingredients offer excellent benefits, while others a bit controversial. Starting off with the base from this formula, the first five ingredients include water, cyclopentasiloxane, octyldodecyl octyldodecanoate, cyclohexasiloxane and ethylhexyl palmitate. Cyclopentasiloxane and cyclohexasiloxane are both extremely common ingredients in skincare and are identified most commonly as silicones. Silicones as a whole are generally quite well-tolerated, and can act as excellent lightweight emollients and occlusives to moisturize and protect the skin. That being said, there are some who find silicones to be irritating or pore clogging, so if you do have a history of silicone-based skin reactions, you’ll want to perform a patch test before incorporating this product into your regular skincare routine. Aside from these two ingredients, we also have two less common skincare ingredients, octyldodecyl octyldodecanoate and ethylhexyl palmitate. Octyldodecyl octyldodecanoate is a skin conditioning agent, while ethylhexyl palmitate is a palm oil derived ingredient that serves as an alternative to traditional silicones.
But that’s only a small handful of what’s included in the Luxe Cream. From here, there are dozens of extracts, actives and vitamins which make up significantly less of the formula, but still deliver the majority of the benefits. Included in this group are ingredients like algae extract, shea butter, lactobacillus ferment, cucumis sativus fruit extract, pyrus malus fruit extract, scutellaria baicalensis root extract, panax ginseng root extract, equisetum arvense extract, chondrus crispus extract, calendula officinalis extract and of course, caviar extract. Each of these extract and botanical ingredients offer a different set of benefits.
Unfortunately however, there are a number of ingredients that are fairly controversial. This includes four different parabens, petroleum, fragrance, dyes and benzyl alcohol. Some of these ingredients can actually be fairly beneficial for some, like petroleum jelly, but there are some that still choose to avoid this ingredient.
Complimenting Product: Apply a serum before using The Skin Caviar Luce Cream. Serums contain a higher concentration of actives and penetrate deeper into the skin. We recommend Carrot & Stick The Repair Serum. It contains 7 plant-based peptides to help promote smoother looking skin.
How To Use The Skin Caviar Luxe Cream
La Prairie recommends that users use this product morning and evening as the last step in your skincare routine. For best results, apply a small amount onto fingertips and smooth the product onto skin in upward, sweeping motions.

Sheen Original review: Apr 08, 2023.
I’ve been using La Prarie moisturisers for nearly 20 years. I am now in in my early 50’s and I still very rarely wake make up. I tried to use the latest cheaper products available but they pale in comparison to La Prairie. I am now using the White Caviar as I find that the Gold is a little heavy for my skin. La Prarie is expensive but each jar lasts for many months as you need very little. Using this product for many years, I rarely ever go to have facial or any other treatments.
